Verse 255 of Surah-e-Baqarah (chapter: The cow) in holy Quran is called Ayat Al-Kursi: “Allah! There is no god but He - the Living, the Self-subsisting, Eternal. No slumber can seize Him or Sleep. His are all things in the heavens and on earth. Who is there can intercede in His presence except as he permitted? He knoweth what (appeared to His creatures as) before or after or behind them. Nor shall they compass Aught of his knowledge Except as He willeth. His throne doth extend over the heavens and on earth, and He feeleth No fatigue in guarding and preserving them, For He is the Most High, The Supreme (in glory).”
The benefits of Ayat Al-Kursi are:
1. Holy prophet (SAW) said: whoever recites the first 4 ayahs of Sura Baqarah, then Ayatul Kursi and then the last 3 ayahs of Surah e Baqarah, will not be inflicted with any kind of difficulty in his wealth or himself, Satan will not come near him and he will not forget the Qur'an.
2. Holy Prophet (SAW) said: Qur'an is a great word, and Sura Baqarah is the leader of the Qur'an and Ayatul Kursi is the leader of Sura Baqarah. In Ayatul Kursi there are 50 words and for each word there are 50 blessings and good in it.
This ayat was revealed after Hijra. During its revelation it was accompanied by thousands of angels because of its greatness and glory.
Shaitan and Iblis became worried because there is an obstacle in their quest to mislead mankind. Rasulullah saw. Immediately ordered Zaid b Thabit to write it down and spread the message.
Ubayy bin Ka`b (radiyallaahu anhu) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Abu Mundhir! Do you know which Ayah in Allah's Book is the greatest? I said: 'Allah and His messenger know best.'
He (peace be upon him) again said: 'Do you know which Ayah in Allah's Book, according to you, is the greatest?' I (Abu Mundhir) replied: ‘It is 'Allah la ilaha illaa Hu wal Hayyul Qayyum'. [2:255].
Thereupon he (peace be upon him) patted me in the chest and said, ' Rejoice by your knowledge, O Abu Mundhir! (i.e., may this knowledge be a source of respect, honour and benefit to you)'."
[Muslim]
Asma' bint Yazid (radiyallaahu anhu) reported, ' I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say about these two following Ayahs, i.e., verses: "Allah! There is no god but He - the Living, the Self-subsisting, Eternal. [2:255], and, Alif Lam Mim, Allah! There is no god but He - the Living, the Self-subsisting, Eternal [3:1-2], that they contain Allah's Greatest Name."
[Imam Ahmed bin Hanbal in his Musnad]
Abu Umaamah Al-Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The one who recites it after each of the obligatory prayers, then death will be the only thing preventing him from entering Paradise."
[Ibn Sunni, Ibn Hibban]
Abu Dharr said; O Messenger of Allah, what is the greatest thing that has been revealed to you?’ He said, Ayat al-Kursi, 'Allah! La ilaha illaa Huwa'.
When you lie down in your bed, recite ayat al-Kursi, Allah! La ilaha ILA Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the ever living, and the One Who sustains and protects all that exists… [al-Baqarah 2:255] until the end of the ayah, then you will have a protector from Allah and no shaitans (devil) will come near you until morning comes
[Sahih al-Bukhari]
Abu Hurairah (radiyallaahu anhu) narrated; In Surah al-Baqarah there is an ayah which is the best of all the ayahs of the Qur’an. It is never recited in a house but the Shaitan leaves: Ayat al-Kursi.
Everything has its pinnacle and the pinnacle of the Qur’an is Surah al-Baqarah. In it there is an ayah, which is one of the greatest in the Qur’an: Ayat al-Kursi
Do you know the Ayatul Kursi?" Anas (radiyallaahu anhu) replied "I know". The Prophet (Sallallaahu alayhi Wasallam) said, "It is equal to a quarter of the Qur'an
The magnificence and special status of this verse makes the chapter it occurs in special too because the topic is about Allah's unity as well as Allah's nature and attributes. This makes the doctrine lofty and extremely important.
We should be on full guard in preserving and maintaining Allah's transcendence (tanzih) and sovereignty. In other words, we should be pondering about Tawhid and its implications. Do we for example do anything that might compromise Allah's sovereignty or are we engaging in anything that might border on or infringe upon His right to be Legislator or Lawgiver.
Pondering over Ayat al-Kursi should make us feel humbled before the Majesty and Glory of Allah SWT. It should remind us of the sheer insignificant standing we have in comparison to Him and how this alerts us to the unjustified character of our haughtiness, arrogance and pride in making ourselves the standard in all things whereas only He has the right to set standards.
Through Islam, you are going to have a much better understanding of Allah. You will be capable of identifying Him as well as His role in your life. Aside from that, you will also be capable of communicating with Him any time you choose. Islam also assists an individual to know their roots as well as the reason why they are on earth. This is because it provides great answers to different philosophical questions.
2. Loyalty to Allah
Due to the first benefit of Islam in which you have better knowledge of Allah, you allegiance, obedience and loyalty will be to Allah only. You will undeniably put all your trust in Allah and follow Him prior to following anyone else.
May Allah make our efforts sincere and keep us all on the straight path...........
